Small Seconds Subdial
A watch component, material or construction term describing Small Seconds Subdial.
Also known as: small seconds, subsidiary seconds, sub-seconds, seconds subdial

Definition
A small seconds subdial is a dedicated subsidiary dial that displays the watch's continuously running seconds instead of using a central seconds hand. In many traditional mechanical movements, placing the seconds display off-centre allows it to be driven directly or simply from the movement's wheel train, historically avoiding the extra gearing needed for centre seconds. Common positions include 6 or 9 o'clock, although movement architecture determines the actual location.
Why it matters
Small seconds can reveal the underlying movement architecture and gives a dial a traditional visual character. It should not be confused with a chronograph seconds counter, which measures elapsed time on demand.
