Small Seconds
A seconds display positioned on a separate subdial rather than using a central seconds hand.
Also known as: Subsidiary seconds, Sub-seconds, Small-seconds

Definition
Small seconds displays the running seconds on a subsidiary dial rather than with a central hand. The layout often reflects movement architecture: in many traditional movements the seconds indication can be taken from a wheel positioned away from the dial centre, making a subdial mechanically natural. Small-seconds placement varies—6 and 9 o’clock are common—and can strongly influence dial balance.
Why it matters
Small seconds changes both dial design and movement layout; it is not inherently more or less accurate than central seconds.
