Serial Number
A unique or near-unique manufacturer identifier assigned to an individual watch or case.
Also known as: Watch serial, Serial, Individual number

Definition
A serial number is an identifier assigned to an individual watch, case or movement rather than to every example of the same model. Manufacturers use different serial systems and may place numbers on the case, movement, warranty documentation or electronic records. Historical serial ranges can sometimes help estimate production period, but practices vary and many modern brands do not publish complete serial-to-date data.
Why it matters
Serials can support provenance and authentication, but a plausible number alone does not prove authenticity; it must be consistent with the reference, era and manufacturer records.
