Definition

Production year is the year in which a watch or major component was manufactured, which may differ from its retail sale date, warranty activation date or model-launch year. Dating methods vary by brand and era: serial ranges, caseback codes, movement numbers, archive extracts or original papers may provide evidence. For watches assembled over long production cycles, individual components can also pre-date final assembly.

Why it matters

Production year can affect specification, originality, rarity and value because manufacturers often make running changes within the same reference.
