Definition

A hand-winding function allows the mainspring of a mechanical watch to be wound by turning the crown. It is essential to a manual-winding movement and may also be included in an automatic movement so the wearer can add energy without relying on rotor motion. Crown rotation drives the winding train and mainspring barrel; a slipping bridle or other protection in many automatic systems prevents harmful overwinding.

Why it matters

Hand winding is useful for restarting an automatic watch that has stopped and lets owners top up power before wear. Crown feel and manufacturer guidance matter because mechanisms differ.
