Definition

GPS in a watch means the watch contains a receiver for the U.S. Global Positioning System, which broadcasts satellite position and precise time signals. Depending on the watch, GPS can be used for location, route and speed tracking, automatic time-zone/time correction, or precise time synchronisation. Reception depends on satellite visibility, antenna design and environment; buildings, trees and indoor use can degrade positioning.

Why it matters

GPS can make a sports watch genuinely location-aware and can also provide exceptionally accurate time synchronisation, but continuous reception consumes more power than ordinary timekeeping.
