Definition

Gold is a precious metal used in watch cases, bracelets, crowns, bezels, dials and decorative movement components. Pure 24-carat gold is soft and highly malleable, so watch cases are normally made from gold alloys that mix gold with other metals to improve hardness and alter colour. A common luxury-watch standard is 18-carat gold, which contains 75% gold and is also expressed as 750 parts per thousand. The alloying recipe determines whether the result appears yellow, white, rose or another shade and can also influence hardness and finishing behaviour.

Why it matters

Gold changes both the intrinsic material value and the physical character of a watch. It is denser and generally softer than steel, so precious-metal watches often feel heavier and can show scratches or dents differently; alloy composition also matters when comparing colour and durability.
