Frequency (Hz)

A watch specification field known as Frequency (Hz), used to describe or compare a measurable or identifying characteristic of a watch.

Also known as: Beat frequency, Movement frequency, Hertz

Definition

Frequency is the number of complete oscillations a watch’s regulating oscillator makes each second, expressed in hertz (Hz). In a mechanical watch one complete balance oscillation consists of two vibrations, so 4 Hz equals 8 vibrations per second or 28,800 vibrations per hour. Common mechanical frequencies include 2.5, 3, 4 and 5 Hz. Higher frequency can improve averaging of small disturbances but also changes energy consumption and movement design.

Why it matters

Frequency helps explain seconds-hand beat rate and movement engineering, but a higher number does not automatically make one watch more accurate than another.
