Definition

A folding clasp is an articulated watch fastening that opens by unfolding one or more hinged metal sections and closes by folding them back into a compact locked position. FHH notes an important safety advantage: even if a folding buckle opens accidentally, the articulated structure can continue to retain the strap sufficiently to reduce the chance of the watch immediately slipping from the wrist. Folding clasps are common on metal bracelets and are also fitted to leather or rubber straps.

Why it matters

A folding clasp can be quicker to use and more secure than completely separating a strap at every removal. On leather straps it can also reduce repeated bending around a tang buckle, although clasp bulk and fit need to suit the wearer’s wrist.
