Definition

A fluted bezel has a repeating series of grooves or ridges around its circumference. Fluting began as a functional way to give tools purchase on screw-down bezels in some early water-resistant case designs, but on many modern watches it is primarily decorative. The facets catch light strongly, so a fluted bezel can make a relatively simple case appear more ornate. The term describes the surface geometry, not the material: fluted bezels can be made from different metals and should not be assumed to rotate.

Why it matters

Fluting has a large visual effect because its facets reflect light from changing angles. It can also be historically significant where the pattern originated from functional case construction.
