Definition

An elapsed-time bezel is a rotating scale used to measure how much time has passed from a chosen starting point. The wearer rotates the bezel’s zero marker to the current minute hand position; as the minute hand advances, elapsed minutes are read directly from the bezel. Dive bezels are the best-known form, but elapsed-time bezels can be used for parking, cooking, exercise and other intervals. Depending on purpose, they may be unidirectional or bidirectional.

Why it matters

It provides a simple mechanical timer with no chronograph mechanism. The direction and security of rotation matter when the bezel is intended for safety-critical diving.
