Definition

Dual time is a general watch function that displays the time in two time zones simultaneously. Unlike GMT, which commonly uses a central 24-hour hand, dual-time watches may use a second 12-hour subdial, an additional hour hand, digital display or another layout. The second display may or may not distinguish day from night, so a 24-hour or AM/PM indicator can be important. 'Dual time' describes the outcome rather than one standard mechanism.

Why it matters

It is useful for travellers and anyone working across regions, but the ease of independently setting one zone often matters more than the label itself.
