Definition

A dive watch is a watch designed for underwater use, typically combining strong water resistance, high legibility and a secure method of measuring elapsed dive time. In casual usage many watches with rotating bezels are called dive watches, but ISO 6425 defines formal requirements and tests for a diver’s watch, including operation at depths of at least 100 m and a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. A dive-style watch may copy the visual language without meeting that standard.

Why it matters

This distinction matters when a watch will actually be used underwater. Buyers should check tested water resistance and manufacturer claims rather than relying on appearance alone.
