Definition

The dial is the visible face beneath the crystal on which the time and other indications are read. It provides the surface for hour markers, numerals, minute tracks, logos and apertures, and may also carry subdials or exposed complications. Dials can be metal, enamel, lacquer, stone, mother-of-pearl or other materials and can be printed, engraved, guilloché, brushed, sunburst-finished or otherwise decorated. The dial is normally fixed to the movement so its indications align precisely with the hands and calendar mechanisms.

Why it matters

The dial is the main interface between the movement and the wearer. Its layout, contrast and finishing determine legibility and much of a watch's visual identity; originality and condition can also be important to collectors.
