Cyclops Lens
A watch component, material or construction term describing Cyclops Lens.
Also known as: date magnifier, date magnifying lens, Cyclops magnifier

Definition
A Cyclops lens is a small magnifying lens positioned over a watch's date display to make the date numerals easier to read. It is normally attached to or formed as part of the crystal and aligned directly above the date window. Magnification strength, lens shape and whether the lens is on the outer or inner surface vary by manufacturer. The term is strongly associated with Rolex, which introduced its Cyclops date magnifier in the 1950s, but magnifying date lenses are now used by many brands.
Why it matters
A date magnifier can make a small date display substantially easier to read, especially on compact dials. It also changes the visual symmetry of the crystal and is a recognisable design cue on many watches.
