Definition

The crown is the external control, normally mounted on the side of the case, that connects through the winding stem to the movement. Depending on the watch, turning or pulling the crown can wind a mechanical mainspring, set the hands, correct the date or other calendar indications and operate additional functions. Crowns may push in, screw down or use more specialised locking systems. Because the stem passes through the case, the crown and its seals are critical points in water-resistant construction and are vulnerable to impact if left unprotected.

Why it matters

The crown is one of the parts an owner handles most often. Its size, grip, thread condition and sealing affect ease of use, winding feel and water resistance, while a damaged stem or crown can prevent normal setting or winding.
