Crown Guards
A watch component, material or construction term describing Crown Guards.
Also known as: crown protectors, crown protection, crown shoulders

Definition
Crown guards are raised sections of the case that flank the winding crown to reduce the chance of it being struck, bent or accidentally manipulated. They are especially common on sports and tool watches, where an exposed crown and stem could be vulnerable to impact. Guards may be smoothly integrated into the middle case, sharply profiled, asymmetrical or combined with a locking mechanism. Their size and shape affect both protection and access: very substantial guards can make a crown harder to grip, particularly with gloves.
Why it matters
A bent crown or stem can affect winding, setting and sealing. Crown guards add useful protection on active watches, but their ergonomics matter if the crown is used frequently.
