Definition

A complication is a watch function or mechanism beyond the basic indication of hours, minutes and seconds. Classic examples include calendars, chronographs, alarms, repeaters, multiple time zones and astronomical displays. FHH uses an extended definition that also includes mechanisms such as the tourbillon and self-winding even though they do not strictly add a displayed function. A watch can combine several complications, and increasing complication count usually increases the number of components, setting interactions and servicing complexity—but a higher count does not automatically mean better watchmaking.

Why it matters

Understanding complications helps buyers distinguish genuine mechanical functionality from styling. They can add usefulness and horological interest, but also cost, thickness, energy demand and servicing complexity.
