Definition

Baton markers are elongated, bar-shaped hour markers used in place of numerals. They may be printed or applied and can be polished, faceted, painted or filled with luminous material. Their simple geometry makes them adaptable to dress, sports and everyday watches and can leave more visual space on the dial than large numerals. Baton markers should not be confused with baton-shaped hands, which use a similar descriptive term for a different component.

Why it matters

Batons can deliver strong orientation cues with relatively little visual clutter. Their width, length, finishing and lume application have a large effect on both legibility and dial style.
