Definition

Arabic numerals on a watch dial use the familiar 0–9 numeral system to mark hour positions, most commonly 1 through 12. They may appear at every hour or only at selected positions, and can be printed, applied, engraved or filled with luminous material. Typeface, size and orientation strongly influence the character and legibility of the dial. In watch terminology, 'Arabic numerals' distinguishes these figures from Roman numerals, baton markers and other index styles; it does not imply an Arabic-language dial.

Why it matters

Arabic numerals can provide fast recognition and excellent legibility, particularly on field, pilot and tool watches. Typeface and spacing also make them a major stylistic element.
